August 2009 ‘What do you want to be when you grow up?’ Giveaway!

Posted by virtualvocations on August 3, 2009

Picture 31We all remember the classic question from when we were younger, ‘What do you want to be when you grow up?’  And me, a classic girl, always replied that I wanted to be a mom and a nurse…  How our perspectives change!  Well, I am a mom, but definitely not a nurse!!  This month, we want to hear what your answer as a kid was to the question, ‘What do you want to be when you grow up’?  Or, if you are STILL growing up, what do you want to be in the future???  As the kids go back to school this month to learn more about who they want to be, it is fun to look back, and to look forward to what we wanted, and what we are striving for now.  Enjoy the school year!

Did You Know? -Searching for Jobs on VirtualVocations

Posted by virtualvocations on August 3, 2009

Yes, we realize our search function leaves a lot to be desired, especially for our everyday users when they are browsing for jobs.  However, we are working on new additions to the programming and the way our site is setup to make it a bit easier on everyone.  In the meantime, we wanted to outline a few of the ways you can refine the jobs you are looking for when using VirtualVocations.

Search By:

Job Industry- Depending on what type of job you are looking for, you can type in just the keyword, such as web design, data entry, administrative assistant, etc.

City/State- You can search by typing in your city or state, we would recommend trying it two different ways, searching by city alone, or by the full spelled out name of the state (Georgia, instead of GA)

City/State + Job Industry- You can also search by city and/or state as well as the industry, so typing in a search such as ‘creative writer Florida’ will bring up any available jobs matching that criteria.

It is important to note that the search results come up with the most relevant results at the top, and the lesser matching results as you move farther down the list.

We also now provide our jobs in RSS feed, as well as through Twitter!

We hope these tips will help all of you in your job searching experience with us!

My New

Posted by virtualvocations on July 2, 2009

Picture 23For years, my homepage has been automatically set to Google, everyday, I sit down at my computer, pull up my homepage, and wade through all of my bookmarks, icons saved to my computer screen, sites saved to my toolbar, etc. I’m sure some of you are much more organized, but hopefully I’m not completely alone in my pain! I am truly a click fanatic with my site links located everywhere!

Then, I started using It is the simplest, but most convenient idea I have come across lately to make my workday at home much more effective. It is a website created by Joseph Stevenson in 2008, and allows users to customize their own homepage!

It is completely free, you just register and it pulls up a page that allows you to add links to all the sites you frequent the most, in different categories. You can make a Personal, Business, Financial, etc. category for whatever suits your interests.

The site also allows you to set your own background image and colors for that extra personalizing we all like. So go ahead, check it out! Hopefully it will help your ‘online organization’ skills as much as it has helped mine!

Happy Fourth of July!

Posted by virtualvocations on July 2, 2009

flag I love the fourth of July! It’s such a nice, informal holiday when family and friends get together and just ‘hang out’. I love the BBQ, pool time and late night visiting with the people I care about. Living in the hot desert has made me a little less inclined to drive into town and watch the fireworks in 102 degree weather, but, I usually end up doing it anyway, it’s part of the tradition.

I also love the fourth because it’s one of the very few times when I see people acting patriotic. Flags are waving, people stand when the national anthem is played and there is a quiet appreciation of the fact that we DO have so many freedoms here, even though it isn’t perfect.

So, enjoy your fourth, and all the people you care about, and be sure to remember all those that made our freedoms possible, I know I will!

Taking a Break from Working at Home

Posted by virtualvocations on July 2, 2009

Once in a while, we all need a break from working at home. If you had a traditional onsite position, that break could be a business trip, a training seminar, an offsite meeting, or anything else that would take you away from the mundane of the regular work day and let you get ‘away’ for a little while. What happens to telecommuters when they need a break from working at home? A change of scenery can help improve performance, help clear your mind for new ideas and allow you to ‘get out of the office’.

As I was thinking about writing on this topic, I realized there have been many times when some of my best work has been done while I am sitting in a local coffee shop or library, rather than in my living room or my office. In fact, as I am writing this, I am in the van with my husband and three kids, riding to visit family, I will readily admit this is probably one of those times when this ISN’T my best work, but, what can I say? We have ‘The King and I’ on in the background on the DVD player. :-)

So, what options do we home based workers have for working ‘away from home’?

1. Your local library- I have found that the library is one of the best places to work when I need a relaxing, quiet area to think about new goals, business needs or perhaps deadline sensitive projects. If you have a laptop, almost all libraries now provide access to a High-Speed Internet connection. If you don’t have a laptop, you
can always use their network computers for usually around a half hour at a time. Be careful about working with sensitive and confidential information in a public setting.

2. Coffee shops- This is one of my favorite places to go when I need to get away from home to work. Coffee shops generally provide Internet service, but you must have your own laptop to access. I like to go to the shops when I am trying to think more on the creative side. I love to people watch, and sometimes the added boost of mingling with people indirectly helps me come up with new ideas!

3. Universities- If you are lucky enough to live near a university, or perhaps even
a community college, many times they allow the public into their computer labs to utilize their equipment, or to connect to their Internet connection. Either way,
higher education institutions provide ample space, quiet and opportunity to work
in effectively in a different space besides home.

4. Your favorite place away from home- Don’t think the only place you can take a break and work from is somewhere with Internet access. What happened to using good old paper and pencil for jotting down notes, to do’s or for brainstorming? Take a notebook and a writing utensil to your favorite place, and get to work!

Working from home definitely has its benefits, but there comes a time in every telecommuter’s life when they need a change of pace, scenery, or both. Get out of the house once in a while, and you’ll find you can get just a little more done!
